Substance Classifications

Any products that could potentially pose a risk to people, or the environment are classified as dangerous goods.

Products considered to be dangerous, range from everyday items, such as paints and solvents, to those which are highly dangerous, such as explosives, acid and flammables.

Transportation Companies must ensure these dangerous goods are packaged correctly, in accordance with guidelines, set out by various international & national regulations. It is the responsibility of the transportation company to ensure that cargo is transported safely to minimize the risk of an incident or spillage during transportation, which could lead to fire, explosions or environmental damage.

There are nine broad classifications of dangerous goods:

Class 1:Explosive substances and articles
Class 2:Gases
Class 3:Flammable liquids
Class 4.1:Flammable solids, self-reactive substances and solid desensitized explosives
Class 4.2:Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
Class 4.3:Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases
Class 5.1:Oxidizing substances
Class 5.2:Organic peroxides
Class 6.1:Toxic substances
Class 6.2:Infectious substances
Class 7:Radioactive material
Class 8:Corrosive substances
